History of Polegoda M.V.
According to the records available at Polegoda Maha Vidyalaya, Polegoda Maha
Vidyalaya was established in 1926. When it was established, there were eight students and
three teachers, and the founding principal was Mr. P.C.M. Kularatne. He served
as the principal for a long time. The founding student was Mr. Somapala Kularatne, son of Mr. P.C.M.
Kularatne.
The book states that our school was originally located in a house in the Kurunduwatte area and was
brought to the present school premises in 1929. Old records state that a Sanghagata Dakshina was held in
the present Polegoda Maha Vidyalaya premises in 1929 and then the school was established. Initially,
three coconut frond sheds were used for teaching.
The first permanent building constructed here is the building that houses the Media Unit and the new
Smart Classroom (Mahasen Hall). The main hall was built in 1972 and the other halls were gradually
constructed in various years.
After Mr. Kularatne, a principal named Gunasena was among the principals who
served in our school. By the 60s, this school got a teacher's house and the "Golden era of this
school is considered to be the tenure of Principal Mr.
Abeywardena. During that period, the school's playground was prepared. Also,
several buildings including the old laboratory and the home science building were constructed. It is
said that a Venerable Chandaloka served as the deputy principal of this
school. During that period, many buildings were constructed by holding exhibitions and screening
films.
It is said that former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike visited this school in 1952. Initially, this
school was known as Mahagama South Sucharithawardena Swabhasha Mixed School.
In the 60s, it was a special event that a student from Polegoda Maha Vidyalaya was elected to
the university for the first time. At that time, the Advanced Level classes were half full, and
in the late 70s, Advanced Level classes were resumed. In the late 70s, six more students were
admitted to the university at the same time. After Principal Abhayawardena left this school and
went to another school, Principal Mr. Ranatunga and later Principal Weerakoon served as acting principals. During that period, Mr. Amarasena also served as a principal. In 1984, our school showed an
all-Ceylon level of merit.
From 1986 to 96, Principal Mr. Anuradha Samaradiwakara served in this
school. The Buddha Mandir of our school was built under the patronage of Mr. Calvin and the
library building was built under the patronage of Mr. M.H. Piyasena. It is said that Mr. Ronnie
de Mel, who was the then Minister of Finance, attended the opening of the library building.
After Principal Mr. Samaradiwakara, Mr. Piyasena Jayananda served as the
principal for a while and then Principal Mr. Piyasoma also served here.
After him, Principal Mr. Hemadasa died while serving in this
school.
Later, Principal Mr. Gunasekara served as the acting principal and then
Mrs. Siriawathi served as the acting principal. Principal Mr. Jayasiri came to serve in this school and served in this
school until 2012. During that time, this school became a secondary school and the
primary school was removed. During this time, the school also got the Mahindodaya
Laboratory.
From 2012 to 2018, Mr. K. D. Jayapala served as the principal
of this school. During that time, our school was also selected for the
"Nearest School is the Best School" project. Several buildings were
renovated by removing the tiled roof of the main hall and replacing it with a roof
sheet. The school received two new teachers' houses and the old teachers' house was
also renovated.
Principal Mr. Saman Rohana Karunaratne served as the principal
of this school from 2018 to 2024. Several buildings were renovated during that
period. In 2019, ten students from this school were admitted to the
university.
The current principal, Mrs. W.D.D.M. Premathilaka,
assumed duties as the principal on 14th February 2024. We are very honored and proud
that she is an alumna of our college and a talented athlete who has contributed to
elevating our college to a higher position in sports.
